Involvement Opportunities

LEADERSHIP

Parent Advisory – The mission of the Parent Advisory is to strive for academic excellence for all students through parent and community involvement. The team meets to discuss current issues of the school gaining input from parents, teachers, school staff, and community members.

ELAC (English Learner Advisory Committee) - This committee is in charge of advising the principal on programs for English Language Learners and how to spend the money designated to support these students. To serve on this committee one must have a student that attends Monroe Clark and be classified as an English Language Learner.

Governance - This committee is to improve the educational achievement of all Clark students. The team is made up of staff members, community members, students and parents. It meets once a month and has four openings for parents. Parent members must be elected to serve on the team by other parents.


VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

Triad Coordinator – This group is assigned to student's core teachers (i.e. reading, math, science). The Triad Coordinators will serve as teacher assistants and liaison between the teachers and Parent Center.

Attendance Support Leaders – These leaders will be responsible for assisting parents with attendance-related questions. They will also work with the attendance staff to promote a school-friendly environment.

Parent Patrol – These volunteers are trained to help keep our school safe. They are in charge of patrolling during lunch and after school.

Chaperones - Chaperones accompany teachers and students on coordinated field trips.


PARENT ACTIVITIES

Parent Shadow Day – This activity gives parents an opportunity to follow their child throughout a school day by joining them in class.

Parent Peace Coalition– The Parent Peace Coalition began at Monroe Clark Middle School in Fall 2003. The group provides a space for parents to discuss the ways violence impacts their children, and uncovers pathways to prevention. The members participate in a curriculum program, and then meet as an action group to directly impact the violence that affects their communities.

Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE) – These parent courses are offered in morning sessions and repeated in the evening. Parents choose when they can come. It is taught by credential teachers who are trained by PIQE. The initial planning session asks parents what they would like to include in the course. Curriculum topic include:

  • Home/School Collaboration
  • The Home, Motivation and Self-Esteem
  • Communication and Discipline
  • Drug, Gangs, School, and Community
  • How the School System Functions
  • College and Career Election

Open House– This school event is open for parents, giving them the ability to get familiar with the services of the school and visit their child’s teachers and classrooms.

Hablando Claro– The goal of Hablando Claro is to protect sexually active youth. They encourage and facilitate collaboration between residents, medical and social service providers, and school representatives. At Monroe Clark, Hablando Claro offers courses on sex education. This is offered in Spanish.

Breakfast with the Principal– This parent experience allows parents to enjoy a pancake breakfast and time to meet the school’s principal.

English Classes– The Parent Center holds on-going English Classes for parents and community members.

Cake Decorating Class– Parents learn basic cake decorating techniques. Supplies are not provided.
